Everyone has something happen like this, right? So I told my friend, who related the following incident that happened in class today: he passed out questions for his writing students to look up in their style manuals. For example, how do you know when to use "their" vs. "they're"? Or, when if ever do you capitalize the adjectives "black" and "white"?
Guess who got that question? Yes, the only black student in the class.
I didn't think the incident was so bad, in terms of teaching embarassments, but he seemed to feel particularly abashed...
