Committee members I had imagined as Soviet bureaucrats, grilling me with sneers half-hidden under grizzled mustaches, adhering dogmatically to party principle: 3

Number of lapsed Mormons from Utah: 1

Number of committee members with mustaches: 0

Percent of time spent discussing proposal: 20
Percent of time two committee members spent riffing off proposal: 80
Number of amused looks exchanged between the third committee member and myself at aforementioned riffs: at least 2

Number of times the word "promising" was used (not by me): 1
Number of nods at the word "promising": 2

Number of helpful comments: 1.5
Number of times my eyes bugged out of my head: 1
Number of chapters the French expat suggested I write by June, producing the aforementioned eye-bugging: 3

Drinks consumed last night in celebration
: 3
Episodes of Battlestar Galactica watched: 2 (I know, disgustingly moderate on both counts)
