the agility of the brain

Whew. The end of an intense week, which included 5 rehearsals, 1 concert, 0 nights of getting to sleep/waking up at reasonable hours, 4 delicious bite-sized "chorizos in a poncho" (akin to pigs in a blanket), 1 conference acceptance (with the promise of staying at a swanky hotel! anyone up for a bourbon party?), and 2 birthday parties in 1 night (followed by the rejuvenating 3 eggs this morning [or rather, afternoon], of course). All this has decreased the agility of the brain.

I'm not sure the word count business is working for me. I'm generally a goal-oriented monster -- when I ran cross-country in high school, one of my motivations for running faster was to get the race over with sooner -- but word production may be the wrong kind of goal at this point. The pressure to get the words down, I think, has made it more difficult for me to linger on what I'm writing. On the one hand, isn't that the goal of Writing Month? Spew, and think later? And maybe I'll return to that next week... but before I can spew, I need blocks of time with the computer and books. So for the moment I'll be concentrating on time worked, rather than on words produced.

I am boring even myself, here. Did I mention I went to sleep at 5:30 a.m. and woke up at 1:30? The muzziness of the brain cannot be overstated.

What is more exciting?

Cooking
Thinking about alternative career paths than academic professorship
Practicing
zzzzzzzz.

Ooh, I've been there! Didn't like it ... or rather, I should have spent _all_ my time drinking bourbon and not bothered with anything else.

You're doing great with the word meter --- better than I am, anyway!

It's the impetus to get back up and fling oneself at the Big Rock every single day that's what really counts; words, hours, pages, nose-pickings ... just keep at it and eventually you will have something.

Thanks man. The encouragement helps. And I hope it was the city, and not the eponymous conference, that was objectionable, since I'll need to make some quick conf-friends to join in the bourbon partying!
