a good advisor...

Out walking, I saw the following slogan on a bus shelter ad:

"A good advisor is the most important way to avoid the horrors of trend chasing."

Turns out to have been for an online financial services company, but I imagine it holds true for those of us in humanities departments as well.

God, that's absolutely perfect in the context of my advisor (or supervisor, as we seem to call them up here), and the PhD program I came out of. Lovely!

Totally perfect for my advisor too. I think he prides himself on the anti-trend chasing. :)

This is one of the hardest aspects of g.s. to communicate to undergrads, I think...and I wish I knew how. But hurrah for also having a good advisor in this respect...

In my case, I'd probably say that I was drawn to my advisor because of his distinct lack of trend-chasing!
