- Another woman on my panel was in a seminar I took last semester (in fact, I'm guessing that the proposals we both submitted were based on course material). We're already planning to share a room. It's reassuring to know that there'll be at least a couple of conference buddies beforehand, since I haven't been to this particular conference before.
- I know nothing about the reputation of this conference, but I'm concerned that it has a greater potential than most for being highfalutin and snooty. I loved the conference I attended last fall because it had a strong community of young profs and a few grad students who liked each other -- they stayed up drinking with each other at night, then went to each others' panels the next morning -- and I had an asst. prof. friend who was willing to introduce me and his other grad students to these folks. I imagine this new one, though, as older, more "serious." I'm hoping it ain't so.
- The conference website tries really hard to make the attendees feel good about going to a city in panhandle-state. Maybe too hard. I hope there's at least some good BBQ, or delicious corn products, or something, because it sure isn't an exciting vacation venue.

Small tidbit of news
A paper proposal of mine just got accepted to a conference in October in that odd-looking state with a panhandle just north of Texas. Various things-to-think-about keep running through my head:

Ooh, I think I know what conference that is! I know (through the BF) a woman whom I believe is one of the organizers, and who teaches in said state. In fact, I think the BF may be attending, too. . .
Oh, fun - I was hoping someone would jump in and recognize the not-very-disguised conference! If the BF is going, let me know (here or email) if he's giving a paper or anything. Or if he just wants to meet some random chick. :)
Actually, it turns out I was wrong--the conference I was thinking of isn't until later in the academic year.
Who knew that there were so many conferences in That State?? (Of course, I don't have any real idea of your field, so that may be part of the issue.)
