Negotiating content

just a jotting:

Training this morning wasn't bad - it inspired me to tweak my syllabus and write lesson plans for the first couple weeks of class. This whole "teaching writing" thing is difficult, since it seems like we're discouraged from addressing the content very much at all, and only through the lens of how to make students become better writers. That's a goal I agree with, but it then becomes hard to justify exactly why I'm having them read this particular content in the first place.

Actually, I don't think you can meaningfully analyze the style of a piece without an eye to the content.

Exactly. Hence the problematic desire of the writing program. Yup.
