I meet with my dissertation committee about my proposal next week, and it's been hard to keep a real work ethic when I'm not sure how much they'll want me to revamp my project.
So after a satisfying voice lesson this morning, I had lunch and decided I needed to get out of the apartment, into a more receptive, less pressured place, and enjoy the end of the humidity that's been plaguing us. Apparently when some people walk, they think about things. My train of thought runs more to the "ooh! pretty bird! better walk around that woman handing a flyer. hey, lots of kids getting out of school buying coco gelado. wonder if they live around here or just go to school in the neighborhood. hmm, not as cool as I thought today..." and so on.
My first stop was a used bookstore that happened to have a 25 cent box outside, where I found a L'Engle Austin novel and the third volume in LeGuin's Earthsea trilogy. (I wished there were enough to replicate Jane Dark's offer of mailing some to friends, but alas it was only a small box.) Then I picked up a couple work-related books, plus Pasternak's memoirs--that last came as a surprise to me, but I'm a sucker for New Directions, plus its title is Safe Conduct--I suppose I'm also a sucker for pleasingly multivalenced titles. And it felt right to buy a more "serious" book that didn't have anything to do with the proposal.
I also found a pink cashmere sweater for $18 at my go-to used clothing/furniture store.
Then I came home and killed some zombies.

Hey, I found your book! But I'm not sure what your email address is anymore; is it the one on the blog page?
Hooray! Thanks! Hope you found many others as well...
Yes, the blog email still works. But I'll just email you my address.
DUDE! ZOMBIES! I hate the zombie parts. Are you at the first one or the second one?
Also, I totally know what you mean about walking. Even hiking. Those people who go on long hikes to figure out their problems? Full of crap.
Second one. I haven't got past it yet, but it sure is fun killing lots of them before they eat your brains.
